The piston rings of a hydraulic breaker contain two step seals (the blue rubber ring parts), and the hydraulic oil relies entirely on these two "Y" shaped seals. The ability of the step seal to seal is due to the small step on the inner diameter (the lip part), which is only 1.5mm high.

1. Under normal circumstances, this 1.5mm height can last for about 300-400 hours of operation (the hydraulic breaker piston has a very high movement frequency. For example, in a 140 mm breaker chisel, the piston moves at a frequency of 3.25-4.6 times per second during high-speed operation). Unlike the oil seals in the boom and arm of an excavator, the high-frequency movement of the hydraulic breaker causes significant wear on the seal lips. Once worn flat, it results in the chisel "leaking oil"; furthermore, when this lip wears flat, the piston loses its elastic support. Any slight tilt can cause piston damage (the increased wear on the bushing heightens the possibility of piston tilting). 80% of breaker damages are due to this reason.

2. Failure Symptoms: The above scenario depicts damage to piston and cylinder components due to not replacing the seal within 300 hours. (This is due to not replacing the seal in time and the hydraulic oil not meeting cleanliness standards, as shown in Figures 3, 4, and 5). Continued use under these conditions can lead to severe "cylinder scoring."

Therefore, it is crucial to replace the seal kit every 300-400 hours of normal operation. The seals are made of plastic, not metal, and require elastic force to effectively scrape oil.

For small breakers, it is generally recommended to replace the seals twice a year due to normal wear. For large hydraulic breakers, the replacement frequency depends on the excavator's oil temperature and oil quality, with potentially shorter intervals required.
